First-time riders

Can I ride if I have never been on a horse?

Yes. The trial ride is designed for first-time riders. You start by learning how to approach a horse, and once you are mounted the coach holds the horse and walks with you. Your first lesson

Will it be scary?

Most first-time riders feel nervous. It is higher up than you expect, so the first day is mostly at walk. If you feel uneasy, tell your coach at any time. For riders who are very nervous, the coach recommends a lunge lesson, where the coach controls the horse on a lunge line.

How many lessons until I can ride on my own?

Starting and stopping on your own takes a few lessons; getting comfortable with rising trot takes about 10 to 20. Reaching Level 6, where you can walk, trot and canter on your own, takes 6 months to a year at one lesson a week. Read more

What should I wear?

Stretchy long trousers and shoes with a small heel. For safety, you cannot ride in shorts, sandals or high heels. Helmet hire details are given when your booking is confirmed. Clothing and helmets

How does the KRA Riding Proficiency Certification exam work?

There are five parts: written test, oral test, horse care, riding and leading the horse. In principle you take the levels in order from Level 7 (riders aged 18 and over may start at Level 6), and there is currently no exam fee for general levels. Requirements and riding courses for each level are on the KRA Riding Proficiency Certification page.

What are rising trot and sitting trot?

Both are ways of riding the trot. In rising trot you rise and sit in time with the bounce; in sitting trot you stay in the saddle and absorb the movement through your lower back. Gaits and basic terms

Body and health

Why do you ask for my height and weight?

So we can match you with a suitable horse. The recommended guideline is that rider and saddle together weigh no more than 20% of the horse's body weight. Read more

Is there an age limit?

We look at height, weight and health rather than age. If you have back, joint or heart conditions or have had recent surgery, please check with your doctor first. Riding is not recommended during pregnancy because of the risk of falls.

Is riding good exercise?

Yes. 45 minutes of riding is moderate aerobic exercise, similar to brisk walking, and trotting is more intense. Keeping your balance works the core and inner thigh muscles. Read more

Youth

From what age can children ride?

Youth lessons are for middle school students and older. We do not run lessons for primary school children or younger. Youth riding

What is the difference between a 10-lesson pass and monthly membership?

With a pass, you use a set number of lessons on days of your choice within the validity period. Monthly members ride regularly on set days. If you ride once or twice a month, a pass suits you; if you come every week, monthly membership is a better fit. Membership

After receiving your request, we assign a horse, coach and time, then contact you to confirm. When you get in touch, please include the reference number you received after applying.

How late can I cancel or change a booking?

We assign horses and coaches in advance, so please let us know as early as possible. Same-day cancellations use up one lesson from your pass.

Retired racehorses go through 6 months to 2 years of separate training before becoming riding horses. Having been handled a lot during their racing careers, many are used to people. Some are sensitive, so the coach matches each horse to the rider.
